Love bird

Breed: Lovebird Parrot
Description: The Lovebird is stout little Parrot who measures around 5-6 inches from tail to head. The beak, in proportion to the head, is overly large. They are usually seen in shades of brilliant green, but are available in a variety of bright colours.
Characteristics: Don't be fooled by the small stature, this little parrot is just as intelligent and capable of learning as many of their bigger cousins. They also share many of their other traits like being playful, affectionate, at types boisterous and demanding, but unlike their larger kin, are far easy and much cheaper to care for.
This is an active little bird, very clever and inquisitive and always ready for fun yet when playtime is over loves to snuggle and preen. A very loyal bird that in the wild mates for life and when kept as a single bird will lavish humans with the dedication and love they would of shown a life long mate.
Lovebirds can be kept in pairs or solo, in pairs they will bond with each other, as a single bird they will bond with their human. Only very dedicated owners should keep solo birds as they do take a lot more attention then ones kept in a pair. Lovebirds will pine and get depressed and sick if they are left alone too much. If you can not dedicate a fair amount of time daily to your bird, than best to get two.
Lovebirds are wonderful cheerful little parrots who can make a loving amusing friend but like all parrots do take dedication. Taming and training them will take time and energy and they need ongoing socialization, exercise and attention. They are best for families with older children for a youngster could accidentally hurt them or they could nip the child. Like with all birds, care should be taken with them around other pets, such as cats, certain dog breeds, ferrets or snakes.
Origins: Lovebirds originate from the dry areas of Africa. First brought to Europe in the early 19th century and is now a favourite pet bird worldwide.
Special needs: The Lovebird needs a cage big enough to be able to move around freely, it should have perches that are different sizes in thickness and are set at different levels. Instead of buying perches, using natural branches like apple, alder, maple or beech work wonderfully, just be sure they are pesticide/chemical free. Lovebirds need toys to help keep them amused and happy, mirrors, bells and chewable toys are always popular. Lovebirds will also enjoy a bath a couple times a week.
Highlights:
- Lovebirds are very healthy and are natural resistant to many of the diseases that affect the larger parrots.
- Though most do not learn to imitate human speech, Lovebirds are capable of it.
- Their usual life span is 10-15 years.
- All newly purchased Lovebirds should be quarantined from other birds for at least 30 days to ensure they are carrying no disease that could be spread.
- As Lovebirds bond so closely they do not change hands well, taking a Lovebird into your home is a commitment for his entire life and not one to be taken on lightly.

In this article we will discuss how to train a lovebird and 3 tricks you can teach your lovebird. Of course there are many more tricks that you can teach them, but these are some of the basic tricks you may want to start with. Before beginning to teach them tricks you will want to be comfortable handling your bird, if they have any behavioral issues, like biting or fearfulness, you will want to address these things before attempting to teach them the tricks below.
1. Wave: A lovebird can learn many tricks, but if you are just getting started you should start with something simple like the wave. To train them to do the wave, simply ask them to wave and help them hold their foot up. Reward their behavior and keep doing this until they have lifted it on their own. You can reward them with praise and/or treats, just remember to be consistent with the rewards and pretty soon all you will have to do is say the word "wave" and they will do it.
2. Spin: Once you have successfully taught them to wave, you can move on to doing a spin. To get them to spin, use something as a focal point, like a pencil, and have your bird follow the pencil around in a circle. As they turn, say the word "spin" and reward them after they have gone all of the way around. Do this many times until your bird starts to catch on and will do the spin on their own.
3. Flip: A flip may or may not be possible at first; some birds do them on the perch and others can do it while laying in your hand. If you use the hand technique, you will first have to get them lying comfortably on their back in the palm of your hand. To do this, start small and tilt your bird varying degrees with lots of love after each tilt. Once they are comfortable on their back, help them flip over by pushing gently on their tail. Say the word as they go over and reward with a treat each time. With a lot of practice, your bird will start doing this trick on their own when you say the word "flip".
This article talked about how to train a lovebird and 3 tricks you can start to teach your lovebird today, provided that you have a bird that you can handle with confidence. Some lovebirds have issues that need to be dealt with before any tricks can be attempted; biting or aggressive behavior must be fixed first before tricks can be taught. Once you are comfortable with your bird, teaching them to wave, spin or even do a flip should be fairly easy to do.

The Lovebird's health is imperative when keeping a Lovebird, making certain they stay in a fine condition. Furnishing them with a healthy diet should be the main concern in your list of Lovebird Health. They should be eating healthy foods like, Vegetables that are better cooked, for example potatoes, carrots, cucumber, mushrooms; raw fresh veg like, beans, peas, cabbage, tomato; fruits such as papaya, melons, peach, pear, banana, kiwi, apples, among others avocados are very dangerous for Lovebirds and you should take note of that in you Lovebird Health list.
They also eat, full cereals and whole grains for example, barley, oats, multigrain, and full rice, also, sprouts, weeds, seeds like sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, beans, watch out with lima and navy beans for they also, are lethal. Pellets that created for lovebirds is a good healthy addition. You may want to add that to your list. Also other low-fat, healthy food that we eat can be given to the Lovebirds. Remember though that Lovebirds can be overweight and have lipomas which is a fatty growth.
Also you may remember and add this to your Lovebird health record that they're normally vegetarian, and encouraging them to eat a meat-free diet at a tender age would be a good idea, reinforced with vegetal proteins. Adult Lovebirds that aren't used to this diet can have a difficult time coping, but this is cured by showing them that other Lovebirds eat it too, and it would be a good idea to put a mirror on the new food, as they learn by mimicry (add that to your list).
One of the most major things in the bird's health is to be aware of the likely behavior issues that may happen to your bird, they should not get bored or stressed. They need ongoing interaction, and without these diversions they'd resort in hurting themselves for example they may start plucking off their feathers (one type of behavioural problem you may face). Also make certain that the Lovebird you are keeping is bred in captivity, it is not good for wild Lovebirds to be put in a little cage where they can't fly, this could cause them to become stressed and they could possibly sadly die.
Also one of the most important things you want to pay attention to is the cage and the space you have for your Lovebirds, they need a spacious place where they are able to fly, it is a kind of exercise for them which is important for your bird's health. They also like to bathe and get warm in the sun. If you don't have the required space it will not be a good idea to take on a Lovebird.
It's also a good idea to hand-feed your Lovebirds, that gives them more time with you and also acts like a "getting to know" you stage which is enjoyed by your bird and will certainly be excellent for the Lovebird's health.
